Note: For those of you who`ve been around awhile it isn`t necessary to explain to you why certain discs are so much more expensive.

But we do get asked this question constantly, "What makes some discs so much more expensive than others?" Well, there are several

answers to that question. First of all, demand almost always determines what people are willing to pay for an item. Simply put, prices

are only as high as people are willing to pay. Now, with the economics lesson out of the way, I think I can best explain in a short story

why certain discs cost a lot more than others. I was recently approached by a friend who is just getting back to the sport after a couple of

years off. He said he`d like to invest in some high-end throwing plastic to help jumpstart his comeback. My initial response to him was,

as I would tell any newcomer, that there are so many new discs and technologies out there that you should try to learn something new

and currently in production to save money. But he replied that he`s been playing since the 80`s and has been around long enough to

know that if a disc has a high price on its head there has got to be a real good reason for it because disc golfers aren`t into throwing

their money away. So I asked what he was thinking about buying and he said possibly 1st run champion sidewinders, the ones with

the mini-star stamp on it. He asked what I thought of them and said he was thinking about buying 5 of them. I told him we had thrown the

sidewinder many times in the field and that a sidewinder in any form is a great disc that throws like a hot knife through butter, but the 1st

one I ever threw was a 1st run and that disc was truly amazing and unlike any of the other ones I had thrown. So I talked him into

trying 1 before he got too many amassed in his collection. I also told him a lot of people never try the 1st runs and are perfectly content

with what they are throwing. Several days later he returned and took the other 4, saying that I was right, nothing he had threw as far or

as accurate. Then I replied that that`s not true, I had tried to discourage him from buying them. But he said back that he knew what I was

really trying to do. That`s either the "art of the takeaway" in action or just dumb blind luck.
